Thyroid Conditions Q & A

What is the thyroid?

The thyroid is a gland located in your neck. It produces hormones referred to as the thyroid hormones. These hormones play a vital role in many important bodily functions, including:

  • Metabolism
  • Heart rate
  • Muscle contraction
  • Mood
  • Body temperature
  • Digestion

An imbalance in your thyroid hormones may affect all of these functions and create various symptoms.

What are thyroid conditions?

Thyroid conditions refer to the diseases that affect the thyroid. Most thyroid conditions affect hormone production, causing you to produce too much or not enough of the hormones. These conditions are categorized as:

Hyperthyroidism means your body is producing excessive amounts of thyroid hormones. Common conditions that lead to hyperthyroidism include Grave’s disease, thyroiditis, or pituitary gland malfunction. Symptoms that indicate your thyroid is producing too many hormones may include weight loss, insomnia, or an increase in heart rate.

With hypothyroidism, your body’s not producing enough thyroid hormones. Thyroid conditions that lead to hypothyroidism include Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, radiation therapy for cancer, and exposure to too much iodine. If you’re not producing enough thyroid hormones, you may experience weight gain, fatigue, or sensitivity to cold temperatures.

Thyroid cancer and goiters are also thyroid conditions.

What happens during a thyroid condition consultation?

Dr. Alisha offers comprehensive evaluations when you come to the office for a consultation for your thyroid condition. To help her better understand your needs, she has you complete an online health questionnaire before your scheduled appointment.

At your evaluation, which takes about an hour, Dr. Alisha goes into more detail about your health and symptoms, as well as your goals. She performs a physical exam and then runs lab tests to further evaluate your health, including labs to assess your thyroid hormone levels.

What are the treatments for thyroid conditions?

Dr. Alisha creates individualized treatment plans for the management of thyroid conditions based on the underlying cause. For hypothyroidism, she prescribes Nature-Throid®, which is a natural thyroid hormone replacement medication that can restore your hormone levels without causing side effects.

When it comes to your health, Dr. Alisha’s treatment plans always go beyond your initial problem, and she may also provide recommendations regarding your diet and lifestyle to improve overall health and wellness.
